Astara border terminal is located in Astara city and 187 km away from center of Gilan province. This terminal is placed in common border between Iran and Azerbaijan republic and is the only relational path among Gilan province and Azerbaijan and new independent countries in the region and even is as entrance gate to Europe.
Today, due to economic activities in the region and presenting new international transit and transportation methods such as north – south corridor, this terminal’s importance and sensitive role in country is exposed more than before.

At the same time, with trade and transportation relations between Iran and Azerbaijan republic and its growing trend constructing necessary infrastructure facilities became important in Astara border terminal which meets a large goods and passenger passage volume between the both parties, and in the first step passengers passage status organized in this border point and after doing studies about Astara border terminal comprehensive plan, passenger hall construction operation started by road maintenance and transportation organization since second half of 1998.

Currently Iran and Azerbaijan republic have special role and place in two main international transportation corridors i.e. north – south corridor and Trasica corridor. Iran as one of the north – south corridor founders is a trustee country in this corridor agreement and Azerbaijan republic also is one of the main countries in Trasica corridor and trade and transportation cooperation development between the countries would reinforce present relations between north – south and Trasica corridors and develop and increase trade transactions and transportation between two countries.
Utilizing Astara border terminal leads to commercial and trade transactions improvement, facilitating and accelerating official goods and passenger’s passage ceremonies and accessibility to northern Europe and Russia markets.

Passenger hall in Astara border terminal is constructed in two floors with area of about 3800 m2 and 20 Billion Rials cost includes two sections for reception and official ceremonies relate to passengers and their goods passage separately. This hall public area making was done in a land with area of one ha. Of special features is using green space and compatible architecture with region’s climate and also combination of part of public area of city with the entrance. Also, to facilitate official ceremonies of passengers and goods in the shortest time X-ray controller devices and computer based equipments are installed in passenger arrival and departure halls. By integrating provided services and supervisor offices on passenger’s passage process such as presidency institute, passport office, custom, human, plant and livestock quarantines and other minor service providers such as bank, post office and communications, Shahed store and so forth passengers be able to do all their entrance and exit affairs inside the halls with no need to go out.
