Jolfa border terminal is located in eastern Azerbaijan province and in Jolfa city 135 km away from city of Tabriz. Jolfa is a county between Gharahdagh Mountain and Aras River, the county during history was a transport point for Iranian Caravans to Ghafghaz and beyond Ghafghaz. Eastern Azerbaijan connects autonomous Nakhjavan republic and Armenia through north side. Jolfa based on its historical positions is a place of roadway and railway paths Iran and Ghafghaz and beyond Ghafghaz connection.

Construction reasons

Since early 1990 passage started between Iran and autonomous Nakhjavan republic. By increasing passengers and drivers traffic and lack of proper and sufficient space for official ceremonies a hall was temporary constructed. In 1996, road maintenance and transportation organization based on the seventieth ratified of state official high council as border terminals organizing responsible and based on need and priority decided to study comprehensive plan. Since 1997, after canceling visa, passenger traffic trend increased significantly from Nakhjavan to Iran on foot. Since 1999, traffic became 24 hours and passenger traffic increased to over 5000 person per day and with regard to this increasing trend Jolfa border terminal construction became important.

Jolfa ground border is a border pass of Iran’s accessibility to main countries and fields:
Azerbaijan republic, Armenia republic, Georgia republic, Russian federation republic, Georgian ports in Black Sea coast, main region of Trasica international transit corridor, one of ground north – south corridors passages and Turkey.
3. Presidential Institute
On one side, Jolfa custom because of geographical position and large trade and transit transactions volume before former Soviet fragmentation was one of the most active customs, after improving roadway transportation with northern neighbors and constructing large bridge on Aras River and Jolfa – Nakhjavan connective bridge called wooden bridge to led traffic increase and improve through these bridges with Armenia and autonomous Nakhjavan republic.

Jolfa border terminal is designed in a land with area of 7 ha in which required buildings and constructions are formed in 4 ha area and total constructed buildings infrastructure is about 4300 m2. In this plan, passenger hall with more than 3118 m2 area infrastructure is constructed in two separate halls (entrance and exit).
Passenger formalities building equips chiller and fan cool heating and chilling system, firefighting system and inside firefighting boxes, emergency electricity system which is supplied by generator diesel, central telephony system includes 30 direct line and 70 extension line, urban 3 inches water branch. This terminal cost 25 Billion Rials credit.
